Most of the buildings in Carthay Square were constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. In the early 2000s, a group of residents began working to protect the historic character of the neighborhood under the City of Los Angeles’ Historic Preservation Overlay Zone program. We featured a few homes in our Home Tour 2025.
In 2017, Carthay Square received its HPOZ designation. Our neighborhood is adjacent to two other HPOZ neighborhoods, Carthay Circle (to the north) and South Carthay (to the west).
In 2022, the three Carthay neighborhoods received an additional designation. Thanks to the work of volunteers and generous donations, the Carthay Neighborhoods Historic District was created and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Check out the 2018 Los Angeles Times article, “L.A.’s newest historic preservation zones embrace the past in different ways,” by R. Daniel Foster.
Carthay Square property owners who are interested in making home modifications need to consult the City’s HPOZ information page. The City’s Carthay Square HPOZ page has a link to our Preservation Plan which spells out the guidelines for projects in our neighborhood. See how neighbors have updated their homes in accordance with the HPOZ guidelines on our Recent Restorations page.
