A group of Carthay Square residents has organized volunteers on each block. They are calling neighbors to see if anyone is in urgent need. They have set up a hotline phone and email that route to several of their phones, to make sure someone will get back to you.

Ideas for exercise and community building

We have had some great suggestions for neighborhood activities during social distancing! Anyone can set these up on their block or using NextDoor. Here are some examples:

  • Weekdays at 6:00 PM come to your porch or sidewalk for outdoor exercises.
  • After finishing give our healthcare workers, first responders and service workers a hand and shout out.
  • Organize happy hours with everyone in their own front yards sharing a glass together (but apart).
  • Find out which children on your block are having birthdays and organize ways to congratulate them: Other kids make signs, walk by and wave, etc.

Sidewalk etiquette

These days, neighbors are out chatting, and there are walkers, joggers, dog walkers and kids on various wheeled vehicles. It can be challenging to keep everyone 6 feet apart. Be gracious and offer to go around others. We’re all getting used to the new norms. One plus is that with much less traffic it’s often safe to detour into the street for a bit.
